At the tip of Hwy 180 in what is known as Mobile Point is where land ends and history begins. It was here that Fort Morgan was erected in 1834. This national treasure was vital in protecting the U.S. borders along the Mobile Bay. After the successful British invasion known as the Second Battle of Fort Bowyer in 1815, it was determined that adequate defense was needed to stave off future attacks. The U.S. Government commissioned the fort to be built in 1818, but it wasn't completed until 16 years later.Fort Morgan is a great place to learn about the history of Southern Alabama. You can go with your family or even schedule large group tours. There are also seasonal tours that highlight specific events such as the Civil War. If you look on the website's calendar, you'll find awesome scheduled events throughout the year including historical reenactments, a Memorial Day tribute, and small arms and cannon demonstrations.
