There is a public school on Joe Quick Road, about five miles east of Hazel Green, Alabama. It is Walnut Grove Elementary. It dates back to the 1920's. In my school days, it covered grades one through nine. My siblings and I were students there and I have relatives galore who attended the school. Back in the olden days, both my dad and mother attended and Dad returned there after World War II to earn his high school diploma. My grandson went there and now my six-year-old granddaughter is enrolled. Walnut Grove champions North Alabama by being among the elite recipients of the coveted national Blue Ribbon Award. I believe that public schools across America should use Walnut Grove as a bench mark for excellence. Walnut Grove even has a nationally recognized bus driver, Tom Brandon, who was recently featured on the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Show. What makes him so special? It is days like today. My granddaughter missed school because of an illness. He genuinely cared enough to make contact with her mother to tell her that she was missed. And then there is the school librarian, Holly Whitt. Ms. Whitt has recently selected along with 15 other educators across America to serve as lead innovators in the 2014 PBS Learning Media Digital Innovators Program. What sets her apart? She constantly focuses on growing the Walnut Grove students and teachers with new skills and good attitudes that will produce success. These two are typical of what goes on inside that little block school building. And the other ingredient is the community. Walnut Grove is a wonderful school that has found the right balance between the old and the new. And, Walnut Grove is a wonderful community.
