Back by popular demand, the city of Helena will host "Movies in the Park" beginning Friday, June 3, 2016 through July 29, 2016 (with the exception of July 1st). Bring a blanket to spread out, the family, and some bug spray to Helena's Amphitheater at 4151 Helena Road. Concessions open at 6:30 p.m. and movies start at 8:00 p.m., depending on when it gets dark. July 1st and August 5th are scheduled for rain dates.

Helena Park is a nice park where you can get away from a busy day. It is conveniently located close to Historic Helena. There are nice playgrounds for the kids to run around and play and have fun. A great family place.

The town of Cove is what the postal records of mid 1800s called what we know of as Helena today. In 1856 the name changed to Hillsboro shortly before it was burned to the ground during the Civil war. . Then during the reconstruction years the railroad brought the area back to life. Helena Station was named after the daughter, Helen Lee, of the engineer that was sent to survey the land for the station. The town had its times of difficulty during the early 1900s but the citizens of this small town held it together. That bond is what gives it the charm it has today.

What is your family doing this weekend? For the fourth year in a row Helena Cumberland Presbyterian Church is hosting its Annual Spring Bazaar......one of the community's big spring events that gets bigger and better each time! The spring and fall bazaars are the biggest fundraisers for the church's Women's Ministries and my sweet friend Philicia Danner has worked hard to organize the many vendors to get ready for this weekend. The bazaar will be held at the church, which is located just around the corner from the Helena Post Office, this Saturday, April 11th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You can't miss all the tents! So far there will be about 70 vendors with everything from arts and crafts, food, jewelry and lots more. Philicia says they can still add vendors but need to know by Wednesday, April 8th. Helena Depot is one of the oldest structures in Historic Downtown Helena. Originally built in 1872, The Depot still sells great hamburgers, sandwiches, onion rings and french fries and has a great view of the Buck Creek waterfall in the Historic Downtown of Helena, Alabama. There are few places in the Birmingham area where you can truly feel as though modern convenience has been forgotten, but downtown Helena is definitely one of those places. A short drive from Birmingham, Helena is a quaint town with the historic charm of the late 1800's. "Old Town Helena" is just a small few blocks located on the banks of the river with a historic rolling mill as the backdrop. Helena was founded as a stopover for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in the 1860's. While Helena has been named one of the fastest growing cities in Alabama as well as one of the best places to live, it still maintains its small town charm.

Old Town Helena is the community's original shopping district. The stores were restored to offer unique shopping opportunities and quaint dining venues. Keeping with its history, all of the building have an old timey feel, reminiscent of the early 20th century. Old Town is located right on Buck Creek, which is host to an annual festival, attracting people from all over the Greater Birmingham Area and Shelby County. This long running event is home to the legendary, nail-biting, Duck Race, which starts up stream on Buck Creek and ends over the damn at the edge of the park. Right on the creek, dining options such as The Depot are great for watching the water flow by on a lazy day, before walking it off at the park across the road.

The first sign you see as you approach the Helena Sports Complex is "Home of the Huskies", the Helena School mascot. There are baseball and softball fields that are well maintained, complete with concession stand. The Helena Sports Complex is located near downtown (Old Towne) Helena. In addition there's the Helena Community Center, a great place to play basketball, an indoor walking track and conference rooms for meetings.

The Depot Deli & Grill..in Helena is a great little place to sit and enjoy the sounds of the Buck Creek waterfall. Located in the downtown area of Helena, you can get your favorite deli and grilled items such as hotdogs, hamburgers or just a good sandwich for reasonable prices. I lived in Dearing Downs in Helena for nine years when my kids were little and one of their favorite things was to go to Joe Tucker Park. We would grab the fishing poles, put the bikes on the carrier and head to the park. In nearly every instance, we would run into a bunch of their little friends so they would bail on me.

The park offers a nice lake surrounded by a half mile walking path. There are always geese milling around waiting for someone to feed them. There is also a baseball field and a playground. Joe Tucker Park is a nice place to just kick back and enjoy being outside.
