The Tuscaloosa Riverwalk is by far the best place to have fun doing outdoor activities. The Riverwalk runs along the Black Warrior River by Tuscaloosa's downtown area. It offers a two-way path to make it easier to ride bikes, run, walk, and more. Tuscaloosa's Riverwalk stretches 4.5 miles and has dog-friendly park areas to give your dog space to run. You can even hold a picnic or birthday party using the open gazebos along the trail. With the public library being right across the street, it gives easy access to take your kids to the park or read books outside. There is free parking and a playground available too. Tuscaloosa's Riverwalk is a great place to get some fresh air, exercise, or have a nice day with friends and family.

If you have a free day with little to do, you should visit the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter and participate in their Happy Hour program. This allows you to take the dog out with you for an hour or more to give it a better day. You can take the dog wherever dogs are allowed to go as long as it's not on the University of Alabama's campus and they must always remain on a leash.
You can do this Monday through Friday, excluding Wednesdays from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Must be 18 years or older to participate and only one dog per car. One of the best activities to do with friends and family in Tuscaloosa is axe throwing at Civil Axe Throwing Tuscaloosa. They have packages that include 30 minutes, one hour, and two hours, or you can become a member. Prices range from $16 to $45 depending on the day you go and which package you choose. They are closed on Monday and Tuesday, but open Wednesday through Sunday.

During this experience, you will be throwing an axe toward a target and aiming for the bull's eye. This can be a great family and friends experience and even a great date night activity. All participants must be age 10 or up. To schedule a time, visit their website at civilaxethrowing.com.

SoCal Cantina is a new restaurant located in downtown Tuscaloosa. This restaurant gives you a Cali-Mex experience while providing excellent care. They offer tacos, burritos, bowls, nachos, and more. The environment is so fun and unique while being very family-friendly.

SoCal has a four out of five-star review with many positive reviews. Parking is convenient and is close to the building being directly behind it. They are open from 11:00 a.m. every day to 10:00, 12:00, or 2:00 p.m. depending on the day. SoCal Cantina is definitely a place to check out for a new dinner spot.

Talk about a convenient commute to the University of Alabama! The new 2nd Avenue overpass connects 15th Street to Bryant Drive. The overpass can be accessed by pedestrians, cyclists, and automobiles. It provides easy access to Coleman Coliseum, Sewell Thomas Stadium, University School of Law, and all that the University of Alabama has to offer. This makes commuting to class or work a breeze.

Evangeline's, located in Tuscaloosa's Galleria, is an exquisite dining experience with elegant decor, soft lighting, white tablecloths, well-trained staff, and of course delicious food on the menu. Options include shrimp and grits (yummy), filet mignon, lobster pasta, and salmon. The bar offers an extended wine selection and a variety of cocktails. Evangeline's is one of my favorites, especially for date night. Reservations will be required.

Depalma's Italian Cafe, located in downtown Tuscaloosa, is a bit more casual but always delicious. Order their stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer and for your entree either the filet mignon or any of their delicious pasta dishes. They do not accept reservations, so it's first-come, first-served. Construction has begun at Sokol Park for Tuscaloosa's first all-inclusive playground. Phase one is expected to be completed by the end of 2021 and will allow children of all abilities to play.

Tuscaloosa is very fortunate to have the Manderson Cancer Center in Tuscaloosa. The Center is a certified affiliate of the M D Anderson Cancer Center in Texas.

As a breast cancer survivor, I have personal experience with this wonderful facility and the staff. The Infusion room (for chemotherapy) is beautiful with lots of windows for natural light. That's so important for the patients to have a light, bright, and airy environment. What a blessing this facility is for Tuscaloosa residents and the surrounding counties!

King's Kitchen opened to a sold out lunch crowd a few months ago and has been serving up lunch favorites ever since. Located two miles from the UA Campus, you can get your standard meal and three specials and fresh salads at bargain prices. Bright, cheerful ambiance. Fresh foods and friendly staff at King's Kitchen.

Los Tarascos on McFarland Blvd near the Northport Medical Center is a local favorite for Mexican Cuisine. Dozens of menu items, plenty of Hispanic ambiance and a friendly staff. Conveniently located with lots of parking. And some say they have the best chips and salsa in town.

The new Mellow Mushroom restaurant recently relocated from the dark ambiance of its former University Blvd location to the light and airy open space at 557 20th Avenue by the Federal Courthouse in Downtown Tuscaloosa. Lake Tuscaloosa is approximately 5800 acres and was constructed to supply residents with their drinking water. The children's playground at Midtown Village is a small but fun playground. Although designed for children ages 5-12, my two-year-old son enjoyed climbing up the stairs, sliding down, and playing with the plastic drums. For younger children, I would say parental supervision is a must as there are openings where smaller children could fall off the play set. What I love about this playground is the rubber flooring - it is so nice not to worry about dirt and mulch! Midtown Village is one of Tuscaloosa's nicer destinations for fashion, food, and family fun. It's a great place to grab a bite to eat and do some shopping!

Tuscaloosa Academy is a private school located north of the river in Tuscaloosa. Organized in 1967 by a group of local parents, TA is a college preparatory school and currently serves students grades Pre-K - 12. Enrollment is limited to 40 students in grades 1 - 8 and 50 students in grades 9 - 12.

Tuscaloosa Academy welcomes qualified students and does not discriminate based on race or national and ethnic origin. Athletic programs include football, basketball, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, soccer, volleyball, and track and field.

Located in Towncenter, north of the river, Heritage House Coffee and Tea is the perfect place to meet friends and clients or just drop in for coffee, snacks, and wifi. Many times during the workday afternoon slump I stop by just to have caffeine, breathe, and gather my thoughts. It's a peaceful place that offers quiet in the middle of a busy workday.

Centrally located on 33 acres north of the river at at the intersection of Rice Mine Road, Church of the Highlands is a state of the art facility that offers multiple services for your convenience. The 56,000 square foot church includes a worship auditorium, cafe, meeting spaces, classrooms and administrative offices.

Church of the Highlands, headquartered in Birmingham, is the second largest church in the United States with multiple locations across the state.

The Alberta area in the City of Tuscaloosa has an impressive community discovery center. Open seven days a week, students and all area residents can visit the center with a digital library, laptops and study areas. Heritage House Coffee and Tea operates a shop inside the center too! Drop in, grab a coffee, meet a friend, or have a quick business meeting. It's a great location for students to meet after school.

Today I visited the center for the very first time when I was in the area volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Realtor Build Week. The nice staff gave me a tour of the center and I was amazed at the state-of-the-art facility. I plan to take my little granddaughters the next time they visit Tuscaloosa.
