Dothan Area Insight

  • Dothan Area Botanical Gardens is a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon strolling the paths and trails on a beautiful spring day. The park is open to the public from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. every day of the week. And gratefully accepts donations for entry. There are many different areas to include the rose garden, succulent garden, raised vegetable beds, butterfly garden and even a Japanese garden. The day we visited there was a sweet wedding taking place on the grounds with a reception in the Botanical Center. The park also has a "jungle" play area for the little ones. The Botanical Garden is a hidden gem and oasis for folks living or visiting the Southeast Alabama area.
  • A Dothan must is to have delicious bar-b-que from Dobbs Famous Bar-B-Que on South Oates Street just outside the circle heading south on Hwy. 231. Dobbs has been in business for over 100 years. I remember picking up Sunday lunch there as a child and not much has changed in the past 30-40 years; other than the nearby traffic. We always order the chipped pork, Brunswick Stew and delicious strawberry shortcake to go. But you'll receive friendly, southern hospitality and service too if you choose to dine in. Dobbs is a "landmark" for Dothan; so make sure to visit.
  • La Parilla is by far the best restaraunt in Dothan for delicious Mexican food and great service. Whenever we are craving fresh chips and salsa, great house margaritas and "good" (we lived in Arizona several years so comparatively) Mexican food we head to La Parilla on Montgomery Highway north of Dothan. When the weather is agreeable we love to sit outside. It's one of the few "al Fresca" dining opportunities in Dothan. Prices are good! But like most Dothan restaurants expect to wait a while for a seat on Friday nights.

While visiting downtown Dothan be sure to take a little extra time to stroll the streets and look at the many professionally painted murals on the sides of the buildings. Most of the murals relate to Dothan history or pay homage to noteworthy citizens. If you have lots of time, pick up a free map first at the Dothan Visitors Center and make sure to find the 22+ murals.
