    If you have some spare time while visiting Arab be sure to stop by the Arab Historic Village in Arab City Park. The City of Arab and the Arab Historical Society have done an outstanding job to recreate a setting of what life was like in the area between 1880 to 1940. To date, ten buildings from the era have been relocated to the site. Each building is furnished with items from the period. The buildings are open to the public from March to October on Thursdays and Fridays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday 1p.m. to 4 p.m. Or, you might want to coordinate your visit during one the special events organized throughout the year. Christmas is a special time to visit when the whole park is lit up with all kinds of activities and crafts set up for the kids. Arab City Schools offers one of the best school districts in Alabama, ranking fourth highest in the state in standardized test scores. The school district focuses on preparing young people for future careers, partnering with local colleges to provide dual enrollment programs for college credit. If you're looking for a new place to live and especially if you have kids, give our town a look! I think you'll like what you see.

    The 33rd Annual Poke Salat Festival brings exciting new fun competitions and events into Downtown Arab on Friday, May 19th and Saturday, May 20th. You do not want to miss this! The streets of Downtown Arab will be filled with artisans, crafters, food trucks, children's games and play area, civic groups and vendors, direct sales representatives and several new competitions.
    This is the annual event that defines our little hometown!
  • The former Black's furniture has been transformed to Black's New & Old Mall and has become a destination point for many near and far. If you have a little time to kill and are looking for that something special gift, or unique items to decorate your home, or collectables, or fishing gear, or... you get the picture, you're likely to find it here! You might want to wear a pair of comfortable shoes though. With 270 booths covering 46,000sq ft. on two floors there's plenty to browse. They are open seven days a week for your convenience. Be sure to make it a point to stop by next time you're in Arab.

    This is a place of course that has a funny story. I have lots of funny memories of carrying my daughters here to lay a candy bar on the bridge, drive away and hurry back to see if "the baby" came and took a bite out of the candy bar. It has taken a lot of creativity over the years to figure out how to get the effect of the bitten candy bar on the way back to the car after putting it on the bridge for the kids.

    This morning I enjoyed a walk through our city park here in Arab. After our rain last night, the creeks are flowing and the azaleas are in full bloom and just look beautiful. It's truly a blessing to take time to see the children playing and laughing at the playground and catch up with friends and neighbors that are getting in their daily exercise at the Arab City Park.

    Arab's 30th annual Polk Salat Festival is coming up on May 16th and 17th. Each year craft and food vendors line the streets of historic downtown Arab. There will be plenty of fun activies for the children and free concerts each night. Make sure to stop in at the L'Rancho Cafe to try the Poke Salat!

    Arab has a wonderful Senior Center that provides many opportunities to our senior residents. A hot lunch is provided each weekday, along with activities such as singing, dances, movies and day trips. Transportation is also provided to seniors that live within the city of Arab and no longer drive. The staff also delivers lunch to seniors that are home bound.

    Arab AYSO - Region 778 is a great local organization who help foster our young athletes through the love of soccer. They provide a competitive environment with positive coaching focused on sportsmanship and player development. The soccer fields are located in Arab behind Joe V. Clayton Chevrolet on North Brindlee Mountain Parkway. After enjoying seeing our daughter play here throughout her school years, we're now cheering on our grandson. It's a great way to enjoy a Saturday morning!

    Incorporated in 1892, the town of Arab was intended to be named after Arad Thompson, son of the town founder and first post master, Steven Tuttle Thompson. Due to a misspelling at the US Postal Service, replacing a B in place of the D, the town's name was recorded as Arab, Alabama. This is only a small part of a rich and colorful past of Arab and the surrounding area.

    I laughed when I saw the results of a Google search I did for L-Rancho Cafe in Arab. It came up as a Mexican restaurant under Yelp! El Rancho has been on Main Street ever since I can remember. Serving up the best breakfast, meat and three plates around. Stepping through the door is akin to stepping into another era. There's a group of seniors who meet there regularly that are affectionately referred to as the "Liars' Club". L-Rancho is the place to be during the Poke Salad Festival which is held every May. Maybe I'll see you there.

    The Historical Village consists of a grinding mill, an old church, the general store, the old school house and an old home place. When I go through it I almost always see something I've not seen there times before. This is a really great place to stroll with someone.

    The Poke Salat Festival has become an annual event with poke salat tasting. There are vendors along the sidewalks of downtown, a street concert and dance with lots of laughs and great food!
