The Leinkauf Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 24, 1987. Named after Leinkaul School, this district is roughly bounded by Government, Eslava, Lamar, and Monterey Street. Buildings and homes range in age from the 1820s to early 20th century and cover a variety of 19th- and 20th-century architectural styles From stately Italianate stucco two story homes, to turn of the century wood frame center hall cottages, this district has a vast array of architecture to appreciate. An active HOA is the glue that gives this neighborhood a real sense of community. Having renovated a house in this district and getting to know the people living there I can recommend this upcoming area as one of the best places to live in Mobile.
