Lots of my clients ask me about the Fairhope Single Tax. Simply put, when someone purchases a building on land owned by the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation, they acquire ownership of the building and other improvements, and only a 99 year lease on the land. Fairhope, Alabama, is a single tax colony based on the single tax theories of economist Henry George, from his book Progress and Poverty, published in 1879. One of the wonderful benefits of the Fairhope Single Tax are the beautiful parks throughout the city. The sign near Fairhope's Municipal Pier, Rose Garden and Fountain, reads, "These Bayfront Parklands were given to the people of Fairhope by the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation to be held forever in trust for every Fairhopian."Eleven parks were donated to the City by the Single Tax Corporation. It also helped fund the new library. Follow the link for more information.
