Augusta Evans Place is a tiny, 20 home community in midtown Mobile. It is anchored by the Georgia Cottage, the childhood home of noted author Augusta Evans, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Place, on Springhill Avenue. The remaining homes are tucked in behind the cul de sac entry and surrounded by huge oaks and mature magnolias. The friendly group of residents, known as the Garden Association, meets annually and occasionally has a progressive dinner or picnic for residents. With no through streets the neighborhood is very quiet and peaceful. It's almost surprising to learn that it's less than 15 minutes to downtown and less than five minutes to either the Mobile Infirmary Hospital or the USA Hospitals. The custom homes were built between 1959 and 1970, and have largely been updated! The area is close to great shopping, dining, galleries, nightlife and outstanding private schools, including UMS-Wright, St. Paul's and McGill-Toolin.
