Oak Mountain State Park was a favorite for me growing up as a child in the Shelby County area. I have fond memories of my mother packing a picnic lunch and taking my sister, brother, and myself on hikes through the trails up to Peavine Falls; singing like we were the Von Trapp family all the way. With shaded trails and relief from the brutal Alabama summer humidity, autumn was the perfect time for family fun at Oak Mountain State Park!

I'd encourage you to take advantage of the beautiful nature you'll find at Oak Mountain State Park, located near Pelham, in Shelby County. Park hours are from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and the campgrounds offer cabins, RV storage, equestrian and back country camping, and are pet friendly. Some of the many activities the entire family can enjoy include fishing, horseback riding, golf, a demonstration farm, camping, hiking trails, bike trials, archery, beaches, and a BMX area. If you hear singing near Peavine Falls that sounds like something from "The Sound of Music", you just might run into my family or my siblings' families...passing on the tradition of enjoying this beautiful park.

Pelham City Park is about to see some exciting changes! Although it's in the early stages, construction on a new recreation center could begin as early as this summer with a projected opening date in summer of 2017. The facility will house an indoor track, a large gym, fitness area, as well as meeting rooms and a concussion area. Future plans include a greenway and trails, as well as a new library. Stay tuned for more news on this growing area which is part of a larger strategic plan for Pelham.

Pelham is home to Hydro Ponics of Birmingham. They will show you how to grow plants many different ways. We all know that plants can be grown indoors and outside, small spaces or large, but did you know they can be grown in water as well as in soil. Hydro Ponics of Birmingham is not a typical garden shop. Stop by and just visit. They love to talk shop!

Getting out of Helena and Pelham was pretty difficult with the train track blocked. Even going to Hwy 261 was blocked on this past Wednesday. We will be happy when it is over, but it is a great improvement.

Would you take a dip in a cold lake in January? A lot of folks did and it was all for a good cause. The Polar Plunge at Oak Mountain State Park is an annual event put on by the Pelham Police Department to benefit Special Olympics of Alabama. This year they raised more than $8,500! People dress up in all kinds of crazy costumes. From sharks to mermaids, to the mayor dressed up like a bunny, a fun time was had by all. Check it out on their Facebook page link below.

If you are looking for home decor that won't cost an arm and a leg, put Old Time Pottery in Pelham on your shopping list. Located on Highway 31, it's one of my favorite places to shop when I need to find an inexpensive piece to fill a shelf or wall space. They have rows and rows of vases, metal wall art, dinnerware, art, clocks, mirrors, and almost every other type of home decor you can imagine. You'll find seasonal decor as well. The best deals can be found near the end of a holiday season. Don't wait until after the holiday is over because they mark down prices before the actual day of the holiday.

One of my favorite casual lunch spots in Pelham is Tony's Hot Dogs in Southgate Village Shopping Center and I've never even tried one of their hot dogs! When I was first introduced to Tony's I was told I had to get their giant cheeseburger. So I did, and it was so good I just can't bring myself to order anything else because it is so good! I've branched out from that and now I always order it with bacon. And fries. They give you tons of fries!

Tony's is open for breakfast and lunch and they do a tremendous business! If you show up at peak times expect a line. The good thing is that it moves quickly and it's always worth the short wait. Tony's Hot Dogs has a Facebook page.....the link is posted below and you can find their menu, get directions and operating hours. Check them out!

Many people in the Birmingham area aren’t aware that you don’t have to go any further than a little south of town to Pelham to find great prices on luxury outdoor furniture. The most beautiful and well-built patio furniture I’ve ever owned was purchased at the Summer Classics factory outlet showroom on Hinds Street in Pelham. The store has over 40,000 square feet of space full of discontinued indoor and outdoor furniture, scratch and dent items, floor samples, as well as accessories like lamps and artwork. I personally love the vast selection of fabrics used in their cushions and umbrellas! I have yet to find an umbrella that I love more than the one I got there several years ago. It’s a "fun" place to explore and offers huge savings over retail pricing on excellent quality furniture! On top of their everyday savings they often have special events with even more savings. Before making a new purchase elsewhere, it's well worth checking out their inventory. Easy to find……Heading south on Highway 31 and before you get to Alabaster, at the traffic light just before Home Depot - turn right onto County Road 52, cross the railroad tracks, cross the creek and take an immediate left onto Hinds Street. Click on their website link below to learn more about Summer Classics.

Pelham was incorporated in 1964 but its history goes back a long time before that. When Shelby County was formed in 1818 the county court was established in Shelbyville--known today as the City of Pelham. The city's new name was in honor of Major John Pelham, a Civil War hero.

Ice hockey is a great sport and rinks are few and far between but we are so fortunate to have in Birmingham the Pelham Civic Complex just down the road in Pelham. This facility hosts both 150 adults (about ten teams) in addition to 140 on children's teams and 40 to 50 more in Learn and Skate program. This was a great find for my family. My grandson Tyler has skated for two years and is now on the Pelham Bruins in the Mites program. Stop by the rink; you won't be disappointed!

Grey Oaks is right across Highway 11 from Wild Timber. These communities are located on highway 11 and they are approximately four miles from I 65 and four miles to Hwy 280. This is a great location for a family that needs to be close to both highways. Plus, Highway 11 is a very good road to drive.
