Historic Malbis Area Insight

  • Historic Malbis Subdivision
Jason Malbis, established this community in 1906. He had been educated in a Greek Orthadox monastery, where he learned the Greek culture and favored agriculture. Malbis lived in Chicago before he relocated to this area. Eventually, other folks from Chicago came to join him here.

Mablis Plantation used to be a 10,000 acre plantation dating back to the early 20th Century. On this plantation, they raised cotton and soybean crops. Greek immigrants that came down from Chicago helped to build this community. They built a canning factory, an electric power plant, a turpentine still, an ice plant and raised livestock. They also had a bakery across the bay, in Mobile.

Now, the 860-acre historic district is just a small part of what used to be a thriving epicenter of agriculture. The 500,000-square-foot Eastern Shore Centre shopping mall occupies the area where the fields used to yield the cotton and soybeans. The Lake Forest Subdivision also occupies the area that once was Malbis Plantation.

To get a glimpse into our past, be sure to visit historic Malbis Memorial Church, the
Greek Orthodox Church built in his memory, the French-style manor house, brick workers' quarters and many of other structures at the site.
