Gulf Shores Elementary School teams up with local and national organizations to promote healthy eating while teaching kindergartners the art of gardening. These students are learning to plant and grow healthy foods, such as vegetable, herbs and fruits. Not only is this a great skill to learn to gain insight on caring for something and having responsibility at an early age, but it is a great avenue to teach children about healthy eating habits. This local school has paired up with local organizations and The American Heart Association to take 'hands on learning' learning to another level. This is definitely a good indication of a caring community, incredibly involved teachers and a great school system that would allow and support such a project to be integrated into the curriculum. Way to go Gulf Shores! Go Dolphins!

In Orange Beach, we have a wonderful elementary school. In August of 2015, the school began its first pre-k class. Alabama is known nationwide for its pre-k program and Orange Beach Elementary School is excited to offer this first-class program!

Many people may not realize it, but the Baldwin County Public School System is recognized as one of the most progressive school districts in America. This is due to its participation in the League of Innovative Schools/Digital Promise, a United States Presidential digital initiative.

Through this program, every student receives a digital device for either in classroom use or to bring home. Kindergarten through Grade two students receive an iPad while Grade 3 through 12 students receive a Mac Book Air laptop. No longer having to bring home 30 pounds of books has been one of the lesser of great benefits this program has had. It also helps to eliminate the old "Dog Ate My Homework" excuse as students now simply digitally "Air Drop" their homework to their teachers. While I would love to explain more, this is about where my technical expertise ends.

Along with the digital devices, the students also get to participate in Rosetta Stone, which gives them the opportunity to learn a new language. This is an awesome program that allows them to learn at their own pace and not be stuck learning at the pace that the teacher would determine.

I remember being excited just to have a class that had typewriters! Now you would most likely only find them in a Museum of Modern History.
