  • The OMMS Robotics team won awards for robot design categories as well as for the teamwork challenge on March 12th. The competition was held at the Alabama State VEX IQ Robotics Competion at Jacksonville State University. The five Oak Mountain Middle School Robotics teams competed against 39 other teams at the state competition. Only four awards were given out and OMMS won two out of the four.

Because of their performance at the state competition, the OMMS Robotics Team will compete at the VEX IQ World competition that will be held on April 20-23 in Louisville, KY. They will compete against schools from across the United States in addition to other countries around the world. This is the first time an Oak Mountain team has qualified for the world competition. Good luck, OMMS Robotics Team!

As I speak with potential home buyers, the topic of schools inevitably comes up. I, too, faced this exact dilemma when I was looking for a home. I loved Highland Lakes, but I had three children and their futures to think about. My youngest ones were no problem at all, they would go to Mt. Laurel Elementary if I bought a house in Highland Lakes. I cannot say enough good things about the school and faculty. I doubt you would find many, if anyone, who would say anything negative.

But I had a teenager to think about and I was torn as I had heard such amazing things about Oak Mountain. But, Highland Lakes does not fall into the district for Oak Mountain Schools. So I hit the pavement and visited both schools and talked to as many people as I could.

While on paper Oak Mountain Middle School edges out Chelsea Middle School, I could not find one major detractor to not consider Chelsea. My wife and I talked long and hard; we weighed all the pros and cons. We figured that if we pushed our child to excel he would be successful wherever he went. You see, while the school does play some roll in your child's development it is ultimately up to the parents to drive the overall success of their child.

I can say without a doubt that our son has settled well as he is being challenged and pushed to do well. The teachers and staff at Chelsea Middle School have been a dream to work with. I have no doubt that Chelsea Middle School is helping to set my son up for success in high school and beyond. I am also sure that Oak Mountain Middle school is as amazing as the reviews say. My point is don't let a report be your final deciding factor; explore all options and make a decision based on the whole picture.

Westminster is extraordinary, not just because of the academic excellence and statistics it can boast, but because of the community of solidarity that trickles down from the administration to the youngest student. You'll find peaceful classrooms filled with students who seem genuinely interested and actively engaged in learning material that is academically rigorous. The common theme is "Our kids know that they are loved, heard, and valued at Westminster."

Founded in 1999 as Oak Mountain Classical School, the classical Christian school has a current enrollment of over 500 students (K-12th). • Oak Mountain High School's mission is "to empower each student for excellence." As one of eight of the Shelby County school system's high schools, OMHS has an enrollment of over 1600 students (8th-12th grades) with half of the student body being comprised of males and the other half female. Minority enrollment makes up approximately 16% of the current student population.

OMHS was among the more than 2,000 public and private schools listed in the "Most Challenging High Schools" index published by the Washington Post in 2014, which ranks the toughest schools in the nation. OMHS was ranked #4 statewide and #565 nationally. With a 99% four year graduation rate, an average ACT score of 24.4, an average SAT score of 1672, and 80% of its graduates attending four-year colleges, it's not surprising that Oak Mountain is one of Shelby County's most highly-sought after schools.

"The Eagle's Eye", OMHS's online news site, gives you a look behind the statistics to the school's current events, future happenings, sports, academic, and faculty news, as well as student life features. This online news site brings to light the pride and pursuit of excellence this school community shares. (A link to "The Eagle's Eye" can be found at the bottom of the school's official website.)
