It is getting close to one of my favorite events of the fall. Antiques at the Gardens is held at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, 2612 Lane Park Road in Birmingham October 6 - October 9. There are many talented individuals that will be at this years event. Gen and Ben Sohr of Pencil and Paper Co. will be featuring a presentation, "Creating a Family Friendly Home with Personality, "and Holly Hollon will be hosting an Intro to Calligraphy class. Many exciting presentations this year!

  • There are some exciting changes going on in Mountain Brook! I've watched with amazement as development has taken place in Lane Park and now we have a new luxury Marriott property, the Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook. What a treat it is!

This fantastic property has 100 guest rooms, a rooftop bar, a spa, outdoor pool, and over 12,000 square feet of event space. You can even take a wine blending or cooking class. To see what all they offer and contact them about booking an event or a hotel stay, click on their website below. Only minutes from Downtown Birmingham, the Grand Bohemian Hotel Mountain Brook is so convenient and is in one of Birmingham's loveliest communities. It's adjacent to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, the Japanese Gardens and Birmingham Zoo.
  • Davenport's Pizza Palace has been around for a lot of years and I vividly remember it from it's earliest days. Not much has changed...I can walk in and feel like I've stepped back in time. The decor, the pizza, it's all so familiar and that's what's so wonderful about it. Why change something that is so good and has been since opening in 1964? One of the first places to offer pizza in the area(even with the pizza chains coming to town and the new, trendy pizza restaurants), Davenport's has continued to thrive and I think it's better than all of them!

Until just recently the restaurant operated under the name Jim Davenport's Pizza, and I always thought Jim Davenport was the owner. However, I learned the business was owned by Rex and Ardyce Hollis, who decided to name the business after Rex's childhood friend who was a San Francisco Giants baseball player and had played in the 1962 World Series - because he had a name people would recognize. The business is still run by family although Rex and Ardyce are now both deceased.

What can you expect when you visit Davenport's Pizza Palace? Hand-tossed, thin-crust pizzas with traditional ingredients made with their secret family recipe sauce, salads, soft drinks and cold beer. Red checkered tablecloths and arcade games. Good stuff! Click on their website below for menu, hours and more.

This weekend stop by Brookwood Village where they are selling over 10,000 plants from the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for the annual plant sale. The sale is happening all week this week and brings awareness to the environment, gardens and appreciation for plant life. Check out the article on al.com for more info.

I went to Smith's Variety today. It always reminds me of when my son and daughter were younger....like middle school...oh well. Great place! So many fun things! I found several Christmas presents for the grandchildren. Can't wait to take them to Smith's.

This is one of three villages that show off the charm of Mountain Brook. There is much classic European architecture mostly consisting of locally owned businesses that have been passed from generation to generation and featuring some of the oldest operating institutions, not only in the city of Birmingham, but in the state of Alabama. From local eateries to boutiques to bars to hardware stores, there is something for everyone here. Park on the street and plan on spending your morning or afternoon browsing some of the more unique shopping experiences in the city. Very conveniently located off Highway 280 and within minutes of downtown Birmingham, Homewood and Vestavia Hills. Daniel Development is currently in the middle of a $100 million dollar project that mixes residential and commercial development including a 100-room boutique hotel that will be one of the more unique hotels in Alabama. It is literally across the street from the Birmingham Zoo and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Welcome to tradition!

Founded in 1974 and located in Mountain Brook Village, Leaf 'n Petal started as a small plant shop but has expanded to what it is today. However, it has not lost the down-to-earth, hometown customer service that brings people back. One-on-one attention is the working philosophy according to the website. It went through a facelift in 2005 and the ownership changed hands but the old traditions remained. They added a second location at the Summit and opened a gift boutique at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Davenport's Pizza Palace in Mountain Brook Village has been serving great pizza for 49 years. The dough and sauce are made from scratch and the recipe is closely guarded. A family atmosphere with salads, pizza and beverages make this a very unique dining experience that you must go by and try. Classic arcade games for the kids still are available (bring lots of quarters). Children of parents that used to enjoy the pizza now bring their children to enjoy one of the famous local eateries in Mountain Brook.
