There is an excited buzz among the businesses and growing contingency of residents who dwell downtown. This cityscape is making new leaps in revitalizing. Actually, revitalizing should really be used past tense now as Birmingham's downtown has revitalized. Now it is simply improving with more additions serving to improve its inhabitants' lives. Cruise the streets after five and you will see the sidewalks full of joggers, dog walkers, bikers and strollers all busy living a great, convenient lifestyle. When I have interviewed my past clients who bought downtown, I have heard all of them reflect sentiments like; "best decision I ever made", "we love it down here", "I am ready to upgrade to an even larger condo". These urbanites love their city. They frequently are excited to tell me the latest tidbit of news. Most recent is that a large, popular, national grocery chain is slated to open a store within quick walking distance. I am excited for them! Another is a plan under discussion to bring a bike share to the street corners.

The city of Birmingham is doing a great deal to continue growing a friendly urban neighborhood. Currently the most popular streets in the loft district are 1st Ave N, 2nd Ave N and 3rd Ave N. There are quite a few condos with some high rises on those streets with your choice of fine dining, coffee houses to hang out in, theaters, McWane Children's Museum, YMCA, shops with local artists, and most recently, a minor league baseball park and a natural green space with trails and ponds. The area is quickly becoming a destination spot for out-of-the-ordinary restaurants and shops. Plan to visit the Loft district for great food options and unique retail items.

  • It’s back and it’s gorgeous! Downtown Birmingham continues to grow and the much anticipated reopening of the Lyric did not disappoint! Adorned with cherubs and featuring 12 opera boxes, the venue is an incredibly intimate space designed for live entertainment. The very back of the balcony is only 60 feet from the stage. The space has amazing acoustics thanks to the architectural design which is like the bell of a trumpet. If you are interested in the history and restoration of this Birmingham landmark, you will enjoy exploring the website link below. You’ll also be able to purchase tickets there for upcoming events.

Many people have said that Birmingham was the birthplace of the American Civil Rights movement. Out of the ashes of injustice, hatred and violence has emerged a brand new Birmingham. Today's Birmingham is a leader in racial reconciliation, unity and progress! The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is playing a very important role in helping people from all over the world to understand the importance of equality and brotherhood!

The Institute is not just another museum! It is indeed a museum. Priceless artifacts from America's struggle for civil rights are found here. However, the institute is so much more! It is a place that is bringing people together to help them understand that "all men are created equal!"
  • It's been years coming, but finally the historic Pizitz Building is coming back to life in Downtown Birmingham. This grand building was built in the 1920's and was the flagship store for Pizitz until the 1980's when it was sold and by 1988 it had closed it's doors. Pretty sad for those of us who remember it being an important landmark and shopping center for so many years. Since the closing there have been hopes to restore the building but finally, after a long struggle, those dreams are becoming a reality.

Plans include six floors of residential space, office space on the mezzanine level, a food hall on the main floor, two restaurants and the basement will house an entertainment venue. What a perfect addition to Downtown Birmingham's revitalization! In recent years Birmingham has enjoyed new life with more and more residential space, dining and nightlife.....this incredible renovation is just another reason why Birmingham is becoming known as a great place to live!

After a year long debate over ride sharing services such as Uber, the Birmingham City Council has approved the services. Uber is a taxi like services that will make Birmingham more accessible at a very convenient and affordable rate. You can seamlessly connect with Uber drivers through the Uber app and be picked up within minutes. Similar to Atlanta, you need a car to get most places in Birmingham and Uber will make that very convenient and affordable for you when you are in need of a ride. This will be a great addition to the Magic City and it's continued growth!

Pepper Place Market takes place every Saturday morning at 7 a.m. to noon starting in April until about mid-December. This is such a cool place to spend your Saturday mornings. There are tons of tents with fruits, veggies, herbs, flowers and so much more from local farmers. You'll also see neighborhood vendors with handmade jewelry, soap, dog treats and all kinds of items you had no idea you needed. Definitely come hungry because there's plenty of good food plus lots of the tents have free samples. Don't miss the hummus guys or the flavored tea tent. You'll end up falling in love with the cookie dough hummus and the honeysuckle tea. Also grab a doughnut from Heavenly Doughnuts and do not leave without fresh Clanton County peaches. Around 9 a.m. they do a chef demonstration from an Alabama chef and you'll hear a live band or two playing on the stage. This place is super dog friendly so bring your pup and bring a bag, basket or wagon to carry whatever you buy. Check out pepperplacemarket.com for updates and @pepperplacemarket on Instagram to see pics.

  • What a great addition to dining choices for Downtown Birmingham! Brava Rotisserie Grill on Caldwell Mill Road has been one of my favorites for the last few years and their second location at 20th Street and 4th Avenue North is sure to become a favorite for those that work and visit downtown during the work week. For now they will be open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition to dine in services, this location will offer catering just like the original location, and once they obtain their liquor license from the city they plan to extend hours. Plans include opening Saturday and Sunday in the near future. The menu is yummy! Check out their website below.
