    Beginning on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 the carnival with rides, games and food will be operating at the Clay Sports Complex on Old Springville Road (hours 6-10 p.m.). Saturday, Apr 4th will be a fun filled day with a parade, opening ceremonies at the baseball park and the Clay Days Festival. There will be something for everyone, so plan to come out and join the fun.

    It was known as Bud Allison Road and as Crystal Caverns Road, now as Cavern Road.
    Why Cavern; because, there is a Cave!! It was known as McCluney's Cave, later renamed Crystal Caverns, the property is privately owned and currently not open to the public. In the early 1920's is was a popular location and was open to the public for many years. Recently we had the opportunity to visit with the owners and take a tour of the cavern. I had not been to the cavern in many years. It had not changed much; it was a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. I hope that it can be reopened, so everyone can enjoy it.

  • The Clay Public Library is located in a renovated 1905 Queen Anne style house. The library houses over 8,000 items currently including fiction, non-fiction, children and teen books, books on CD, a DVD collection and more. The library is centrally located in front of Clay City Park which currently includes baseball fields, soccer/football field, playground and concession stand plus there are a lot more future projects planned. Do not hesitate to bring your children to the special events and programs, while you take advantage of wireless internet access or the public computer room. Your children will love the playground and ball fields. Drop by for a tour soon, you will be glad you did!
  • Clay, AL is a small suburb of northeast Birmingham. With a population of about 10,000 residents, Clay has grown dramatically since it incorporated in 2000. Clay offers a wonderful mix of neighborhoods, shopping, parks and recreational activities, and is just a 15 minute drive from downtown Birmingham. Clay is served by three schools: Clay Elementary, Clay-Chalkville Middle School, and Clay-Chalkville High School. Among its best attractions is Cosby Lake, located at 6275 Old Springville Road. Cosby Lake is a small, but wonderfully kept lake that offers picnic areas, walking trails, fishing, and plenty of ducks for the kids to feed. Among Clay's other offerings are a senior center, a beautiful new sports and recreation complex, and a library (known as the Jayfe Ware House) that was restored from a 1905 Queen Ann style home.
  • Clay is growing by leaps and bounds by attracting new business. One business sector, located around the Old Springville Rd and Sweeney Hollow Rd intersection, has seen and will see several new businesses in 2013. This year alone, the Carnes-Hyatt Group has brokered long-term leases for a barber shop, a sports apparel store, and a new 24 gym in the Clay-Chalkville Plaza and Clay-Chalkville Center retail strips. On the other side of Sweeney Hollow, near the Publix, we will also see a new restaurant, Coco Bistro, and a new salon open up this year. Further north into the city limits, we have also seen Clay attract new restaurants in the last year; namely Pit Stop BBQ (formerly Legend's) and Sal's Italian (relocated from Springville) in the retail center near Clay Elementary. Wizard's Drumworks also relocated to the area from Center Point. Sometime in 2014, we are hoping to see the grand opening of a new general store/mercantile shop with bistro in the former Piggy Wiggly location.

    History of Clay
    Although the city of Clay was not formed until June 2000, its history dates well back into the 1800's. The first Clay Post Office was was opened in 1878. The area has continued to grow with many new subdivisions and and much commercial development, yet it is still a quiet little town just outside of Birmingham. A GREAT place to live.
