    The City Of Birmingham offers many great activities for people of all ages. A great Christmas tradition is the showing of Christmas movies at the Alabama Theater. The Alabama Theater is known as "The Showplace of The South" and first opened in 1927. The entire theater has been restored to its original charm and attending any event is like taking a step back in time. A home security and safety site called SafeWise released its rankings of the Safest Cities in Alabama using the most recent FBI Crime Report stats from 2014.     B. Franklin Kimbrell, Jr., D.M.D. is located at 4518 Valleydsle Road, Birmingham.
    Dr Kimbrell does nothing but root canals all day, and I must say that he has the most impressive bed side manners ever. After sitting in his chair and getting prepped for the procedure, he comes in and introduces himself. Fear escapes immediately. Such a lovely experience. I highly recommend anyone needing this service to contact him. He is the best!

    The PGA Champions tour will be playing a golf tournament at the Greystone Golf and Country Club this weekend! Play begins this Thursday and goes through Sunday. The Champions tour is the PGAs senior golf tour (ages 50+). The golf is still remarkable and the course at Greystone is immaculate.     I have passed this beautiful park time after time. I stopped today and walked to see what I would encounter. A mom had her children down at the water letting them play in the water. Another couple said they walk at the park everyday with their new dog. It is an easy path and very open. I liked being in the shade most of the time. It made me want to return with my pets.

    Four blocks of green space in downtown Birmingham linking two of the cities unique "must sees"! On one end there is Railroad Park with its view of the city and a skate park and playground. On the other end of the trail there is a connection to the Jones Valley Trail which follows a former railroad corridor. No one would expect to see so much green space in the Birmingham city limits.

    McWane Science Center
    Located on 19th Street North in downtown Birmingham, the McWane Science Center is a favorite place to explore, learn, and play for kids of all ages. My son loves the hands-on experience every time we visit. The Shark and Ray Touch Tank is his favorite part. You can pet live Bonnethead and White Spotted Bamboo sharks and Southern and Cownose stingrays as they swim by. Another big hit is the gigantic slide that stretches from the third level to the second level.

    This Saturday, February 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. is "Big Machines Day" at the center. Sponsored by Craneworks, children will be delighted by real life size backhoes, excavators, dumptrucks, loaders, and dozers. The McWane Science Center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m., Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sundays from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.. We just so happened to be looking for a venue for my grandson's birthday party and after visiting the 9000 square foot arena decided to go there.     The Thomas Jefferson Tower has a roof top "Zeppelin Mooring Mast". Built in 1926, a time when travel by dirigible was considered to be the next greatest means to travel. Birmingham like many other cities around the world built docking stations. The Thomas Jefferson Tower was a perfect location -- across the street from the train station. With lack of use nor need it had deteriorated. The docking station has not been repaired to look like it was originally. As a symbol of Birmingham's history it was decided to "Light it Up". The LED lighting system will have the ability to change colors. An old icon shall be a new symbol high up on the City of Birmingham's skyline.

    Thunder on The Mountain
    No questions asked; this is where a Birmingham resident wants to spend the 4th of July. Well, at least the evening part of it. Day can be spent at a cook-out, or the river or lake, or any number of fun locales. But around 7- 8 p.m. it's time to stake out your spot for Thunder on the Mountain. My short video doesn't even serve this fireworks show justice. Thunder on the Mountain takes place at the foot of Vulcan on Red Mountain and can be seen pretty much anywhere you can see the Vulcan sclpture. That's lots of places, but some of the best spots are Regions Field, Railroad Park and The Club, although people do watch this show from overpasses and TV stations and all kinds of unlikely places. Just bring your comfy things like drinks, snacks and blankets and turn your car radio to one of the local stations that plays the soundtrack. If you've got those things and a good view, you're set.
