Madison Area Insight

  • The Funky Monkey is one of the Madison/Huntsville area many vintage markets. What makes this one so unique is not just the name, but the things you'll find. The vendors at Funky Monkey have a knack for mixing the old with the new to make it all seem "brand new".

I spoke with one of the Funky Monkey's 30 vendors. Erma Sampson, owner of eCo, has a gift for not just refinishing her selections, but staging them beautifully. She places her pieces in the way they would be naturally showcased in the home. Because of this, it was easy to imagine one of her pieces in my own home.

There are two levels to this market and every space features pieces from times gone by, but have somehow been made to feel modern. You can find old and new clothing, specialty paints, decorative planters, handmade signs, and so many other treasures. Every where you turn, there will be something that catches your eye!

Want a great place to go and have fun with the kids? Where they blow off some steam and you can enjoy yourself too? Try the Insanity Entertainment Complex on the corner of Hughes Road and Mill in Madison. Revisit your youth and strap on a pair of good ol' fashion roller skates and hit the rink or enjoy a battle of PacMan at the arcade. There is even outdoor fun with the skate park, mini golf, and batting cages and I think everyone knows at least one person who would enjoy the rock wall! It's a place for all ages to have some good clean fun. After working up a sweat, you can hop over to Mad Al's; now open and serving frozen yogurt and gourmet coffee. There's a little something for everyone at the Insanity Entertainment Complex in Madison.

When searching for a place to call "home", one of the biggest questions I get from families is, "how are the schools". As a Real Estate Professional, the way I answer that questions is by directing them to www.greatschools.org. However, another way to find out about schools is by going straight to our city webpage. While only some of the information that Greatschools.org features is actually on the page, it's a great way for families, especially ones new to the area, to become familiar with not only the schools but the community in which they live. Check out all the information below.

I recently had the privilege of taking a quick peek into the new Old Black Bear Brewery that has taken over the old Bandito Burrito building in historic downtown Madison. James, the owner, even granted my daughter a picture of the inside sign! Over the past several years Madison has invested time, energy and money into renovating the downtown area with new storefronts and streets encouraging local entrepreneurs to move in and set up shop! Residents seem glad they did and welcome the retail.

Along with the “coming soon” Old Black Bear Brewery, you’ll find shops like Nature’s Apothecary, Saydy’s Bistro, The Main Street Cafe’ and, for those of us with a sweeter appetite, The Whistle Stop Sweet Shop! It’s a nice stroll on a beautiful day! Check it out sometime and don’t forget to welcome the Old Black Bear to downtown Madison, you'll find it located on Main Street. Madison has grown so much that there is not much room left to grow! New construction has been a major part of the choice buyers have when searching for a home. People that are looking to re-sell their homes have had to "compete" with new construction. The real estate market is so good in our area now, that it is a great to consult with a realtor and find out where their home is positioned in the market. Interest rates are at all time lows which allows you to have a lower payment or qualify for more house!

It was a day full of pressure in the North Alabama real estate world. Matter of fact, the whole week was full of demands for our self-required standards. Learning, growing, leading, meeting and helping people make smart moves in North Alabama real estate are always our median, but this week blessed us with a host of new systems and opportunities beyond the norm. My blood pressure escalated. My blood pressure quickly escalated high. Heading home from my Madison office (after my general physician’s office hours) I felt extremely ill. If my body had a dashboard, every warning light would be bright red and every bell would be dinging. I was so alarmed that I knew that I needed to do something and do something fairly soon. Having some very good connections in the Madison medical community, I wheeled into a facility that I knew would give me a blood pressure check. I became their primary concern, or at least, that is how they made me feel. My BP was dangerously high.

Minutes later, I was in the ER of Madison Hospital. I walked in and filled out some very basic and short information. A couple of minutes later, as I finished completing the Madison Hospital form, a nurse appeared and asked me to enter a side door to triage. Inside, a tall young man in scrubs stood smiling and introduced himself by his first and last name. He stood there and asked questions as the nurse checked my vitals. He immediately explained what tests that I would incur. He gave me assurance that Madison Hospital was well qualified to address my issue. Afterwards, I learned that this young man was one of the Madison Hospital ER doctors.

The whole process went like a well-oiled machine. I felt like I was receiving the best care available and that I was the most important part of each staff member’s day. From start to finish with an EKG, blood work, etc. my stay was less than an hour and a half. I walked out of there with a remedy to my ailment taking effect before my eyes. I can’t say that I walked out of there as a new man. I was still the same old man, but this old man felt a thousand percent better. A big thank you to Madison Hospital. But who would expect less in Madison, Alabama?

Mill Creek Dog Park is located at 38 Balch Road, near the Mill Stone Community, along the Mill Creek Greenway. My drives as a Realtor often take me by Mill Creek Dog Park. I've never noticed it crowded, but yet, it seems that there are always a few people and dogs there during daylight hours. The fenced park is almost an acre and a half for dogs and owners to enjoy. Thoughtfully, the play areas are divided into two sections, one area for dogs 25 pounds or less. And obviously, the other is for dogs 25 pounds or larger. Drinking water is available for both dog and owner. There are trash containers and dog waste dispensers. Mill Creek Dog Park offers shade trees and plenty grass.

I like to take in any youth sports activity in Palmer Park of Madison. Palmer Park takes me to a place where the latest electronic gadget is not the mind occupancy of the hour. I see people with dreams for the youth. In Palmer Park I see the future of America being played out in activities. I see pride in a city and a pride in America. Palmer Park has six softball fields, six soccer fields, thirteen youth baseball fields, two regulation size football fields. There are three well equipped concession buildings with clean restrooms and press boxes. There are four pavilions for picnics. Palmer Park has a great playground for the little guys with an ample walking track that circumferences it to make it easy for a caregiver to walk and keep an eye on the youngster. A cool feature of the park is its just right distance from the train tracks. Perhaps one might witness a train whistle capturing the undivided attention of a tyke. Now, that is a Norman Rockwell moment. There are lots of park benches for resting, too. And the playground is ADA accessible. Palmer Park is one of Madison’s flagship contributions to Americana.

Chelsea Park, located off of Balch Road is a small community. Matter of fact, Chelsea Park has a single street in it with only two cul-de-sacs. There are only about 25 homes ranging from about 1800 square feet to about 2500 square feet. What amazes me most about Chelsea Park are the trees setting this close in proximity to the businesses around the new Madison Hospital. Chelsea Park has a very peaceful setting.

The Insanity Complex is an adventure waiting to happen for the young and the brave. It features a 38,000 sq. ft. extreme skate park for skateboarding and aggressive inline skating. There is a 12’ half pipe vertical ramp and a concrete street course with rails, steps and ramps; a 9’ deep concrete bowl with a coping and a 5’ lead in; back-to-back mini vert ramps; three large fun boxes and over 45 above ground ramps.
Or, maybe miniature golf is more in line for the day at the Insanity Complex. The putting surfaces compliment the same putting challenges that may be found on regulation size greens in miniature fashion. With slopes, sand traps and water hazards that may offer a challenge for good clean competition between friends and family.
Or, maybe it is time to hone the baseball or softball batting talent on one of the seven batting cages. And before the adventure ends, most visit the well-stocked pro shop.
Whether visiting as an individual, a family or a group, The Insanity Complex is sure to be a hit.

Dining at Main Street Cafe in Old Madison is a must. I know that I will not be sleeping on the couch after dining at Main Street Cafe. This has been a favorite of my wife's since it opened at the turn of the century. It is a quaint little place. Actually, it is the Old Madison City Hall converted into an amazing restaurant. You might be lucky enough to be seated in one of the two old jail cells. My wife is partial to the Tilapia with mango sauce. My favorite is cheesy meatloaf. We both enjoy the Poule de Normandie. Sometimes the experience is enhanced by the rumble of a train rolling down the tracks directly behind Main Street Cafe.

The Madison Hospital, backed by Huntsville Hospital spurred rapid retail growth for the northern corridor (U.S. Highway 72) through Madison. The original 60 bed facility opened for patient care on Feb 28, 2012. As the city grows, Madison Hospital has the capability to expand up to a 200 bed facility. Being a not-for-profit facility, all revenue is reinvested to provide advanced medical services and equipment. Not only does Madison Hospital offer fast and convenient service to the Madison Community, its attractive campus compliments the landscape of the area.
