The newest sensation to hit Gulf Shores is The Yard Milkshake Bar, located at 3800 Gulf Shores Parkway. They have specialty milkshakes, along with edible cookie dough, bowls, and cones. Choose from twenty-eight ice cream flavors or eight different cookie doughs. You can have sugar or waffle cones, design your own sundae, or try a delicious float. Shakes are served in Mason jars, but what makes them so special are the add-ons – they include cotton candy, a birthday cupcake, a slice of cheesecake, a doughnut, and lots of different candy. Reviews have all been five star for this gourmet ice cream shop, and the lines are long to sample the fare. They’re closed on Mondays, but are open 12:00–8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Don’t miss this unique stop; their milkshakes bring everyone to the yard!

First, I'm so excited to say that we finally have a coffee shop on the island in Gulf Shores! Foam Coffee just opened on May 1st. Foam serves coffee, smoothies, acai bowls and little treats. Foam is bringing the west coast vibe to the south. The atmosphere is amazing! Be sure to try it out. It is located at 2200 E 2nd Street, Ste G, in Gulf Shores.

Why should you move to Gulf Shores, or at least have a second home in the area? Because of our beautiful winter days where the high temperature hovers in the mid-seventies. Winter is one of the best times to be at the beach. Traffic is light, parking is plentiful and the view is amazing! It's the perfect time to relax in a beach chair and listen to the surf. The fluffy white sand on our beaches is the closest thing to snow you'll find and we love it that way! We know that you will love it too; just give it a try!

The beginnings of Mardi Gras on the Alabama Gulf Coast date back to 1704. The first formal ball was held in Mobile, Alabama where guests who belonged to secret societies wore intricate masks and extravagant costumes. During this time, Mobile was the capital city of the French Louisiana Territory before the capital was moved to New Orleans in 1718. Mardi Gras is known in other parts of the world as Carnival and holds the distinction of being the oldest Carnival celebration in the United States. Mardi Gras day is commonly known as Fat Tuesday; the last day of feasting and revelry before the beginning of Lent. Today’s Mardi Gras celebration includes city wide parades with extravagant floats, opulent balls, and delicious King Cakes which are traditionally only eaten during the Mardi Gras season. It’s a great time to visit Alabama’s Gulf Coast and join in the celebration!

Why does everyone want to move to the beach? Reasons differ from one to the next. Boating, fishing, skiing, and a whole list of other activities on the water bring some, while others are content to sit on the shore and enjoy the sight, smell, and sound of the waves.

Whatever your reason, late afternoon is a great time to get out and enjoy the beaches in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Crowds have thinned and temperatures cooled, so the atmosphere is perfect for a long, slow walk, or for an all-business search for the most unique seashells. Sunsets are a show like no other, and every color of the rainbow can be seen in the sky over the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico. So, while “late afternoons” might not be the number one answer given when asked why a move to the beach was made, I think everyone can agree that it should be.

The Bon Secour River is just another one of our water-ways to the Gulf offering peaceful tranquility near the coast of Alabama. Bon Secour is a quiet little community just minutes from the beaches of Gulf Shores and shopping in Foley. The Bon Secour River winds it's way through South Baldwin County. A rural setting, yet close to everything!

One thing's for sure: there's plenty of nightlife in Gulf Shores. Whatever you're into, you can find it right here. At the center of the action is The Hangout. This epicenter of fun offers classic beach food, original tasty drinks, live entertainment, and even some shopping; all right here on the water.

The best thing about The Hangout is that it's a wide-open, spread out facility that has activities galore for all ages. Where do I even start? Fire pits, over-sized beach chairs, the wish wall and art gallery, foam parties, a daiquiri bar, courtyard games, and sand pits. And don't forget, you have direct beach access. Every night there's something to do and live music of all styles. And, of course, it's the home of the world famous Hangout Fest, one of the largest annual music festivals in the country. Hangout Fest has hosted such notable acts as Stevie Wonder, Foo Fighters and Tom Petty among other music legends.

If you are on the hunt for a place to eat a fresh and healthy meal on the island, look no further than Coastal Cuisine! Coastal Cuisine offers an outstanding menu with the freshest produce possible. My favorite item on the menu is The Tino; a sandwich with eggplant, zucchini, goat cheese spread, kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, and roasted red peppers with a smoothie. Stop by and enjoy an excellent meal prepared by an amazing staff!

Congratulations to the participants of the 7th Annual Good Life Ride. The noncompetitive bicycle event featured four different routes that ranged from 10 to 64 miles. Cyclist had the option of starting their route in Fairhope or just enjoying a short ride through the Hugh Banyon Backcountry Trail in Orange Beach to the final destination of Tacky Jack’s in Gulf Shores where they were greeted with food, beverages, and entertainment. Proceeds from The Good Life Ride promote pedestrian and cyclist safety awareness across Baldwin County and the surrounding areas. This year had a large turn-out and was considered another success!

People often forget about the "other waterfront" in Gulf Shores, not to be forgotten is Little Lagoon. This body of water features some of the most spectacular sunsets you will see reflected from its waters. The homes on the Lagoon have the best of both worlds, waterfront and quiet peacefulness. When looking for your piece of paradise, keep the Lagoon in mind. Remember, you can live here too!

Have you eaten at The Diner in Gulf Shores? If you haven’t, you have to go. We had lunch there today, and everything was scrumptious. We had burgers – so good, we have unofficially deemed them the best burgers on the island - , Mahi with Lafitte Sauce – out of this world -, and Ashle’s Chicken – too good to describe. The Diner is located at 2420 East 2nd Street in Gulf Shores, and is open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday – Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday for brunch. If you’re coming for lunch, come early – good food draws a crowd!

Friday night my daughter talked me into going with her for a late night, light dinner. It was 8:30 p.m. so we knew we would have to stay close to home. We headed up to the Fish River Grill. In case you aren't familiar, Fish River Grill is located behind Arbys in the Rouse's shopping center, right smack in the middle of Gulf Shores. Luckily we made it in time because this time of year they close at 9 p.m. on the weekends. The menu at Fish River Grill is extensive, ranging from burgers to delicious seafood including the famous "Cajun Pistol". We were very surprised that there was live music with "Top Hat & Jackie".....pleasantly surprised. I was told that Friday night music is a regular happening at Fish River Grill. Our server Amanda was spectacular being both efficient and friendly....make sure you ask for her when you visit! What a wonderful evening we had! Make sure you stop in and give them a try next time you are in town.

Today I visited Meyer Park with my daughter for some basketball. This park is so nice and clean and there is a great playground area for the little kids. The basketball courts are fantastic and apparently very lucky! There are nice sidewalks for walking, soccer fields and a nice dog area. This park also hosts "Music in the Park". I highly recommend this lovely park for kids of all ages.

Waterway District encompasses both banks of Intracoastal Canal, with Tacky Jack's and Acme Oyster House looking across to Lulu's. By the Waterway and a Craft Brewery will soon be added on the South bank. There are art shows monthly on a Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., next scheduled events are October 3 and November 7. Do not fail to try the dining in the area, and of course, take a stroll along the street or just sit and watch on one of the park benches along the way.

Just outside the city limits of Gulf Shores lies a neighborhood nestled under beautiful trees on Emmanuel Bayou. Emmanuel Bayou runs into nearby Bon Secour River, making this custom home filled southern living style community a great place drop your boat. This bayou is ten ft. deep in the center and is so close to Bon Secour River, where brackish water is great for catching bass and blue gill. Easy access to Hwy 59 and the Beach Express is close-by, shopping a short drive, and nature activities for R&R right in the heart of Brights Retreat make it a great place to explore for a southern living style place to call home.

Glow Yoga Studio, just a hop, skip and a jump from the Gulf Shores Public Beach, is the perfect place to relax, unwind and connect with self when you are on vacation or staying in your second home. Glow offers several different types of vinyasa flow classes and caters to all levels of yogis. If you have never done yoga before drop in for a class next time you are in town. Their slogan is come for the workout, stay for the yoga. It is absolutely true. Their amazing teachers are life coaches in a sense, as they guide you through your practice. I have never left a class without taking some wisdom with me and I have been practicing there for a year and a half. Try it out. You will not regret it. Namaste.

One of the great things about living in Gulf Shores, AL is all the fun things to do and great music. Every year we have The Frank Brown Song Writers Festival in November. Talented song writers from all over the country come and share their stories and music at local venues from Gulf Shores to Perdido Key, FL. Many of these songs you have heard on the radio by the major artist that perform them. This is a great chance to see the writers and performers behind the music and listen to their stories, jokes, and music. It is a great thing to experience and an opportunity you should definitely take advantage of if you are in town.

You don't have to cross the bridge to find great food and music in Gulf Shores. Island Wing Company reminds me of the great wing places I have missed since I moved here from Atlanta in 1999. Great food and atmosphere.
