The people of the little town of Elberta in Baldwin County know how to have a festival. Even though the population of Elberta is less than 1800 ... their German Sausage Festival is held twice a year and attracts about 20,000 people! in 1976, this festival was started as a fundraiser for the Volunteer Fire Department but with the popularity of the festival, the proceeds now fund many different needs of the town.

Have you visited the Town of Elberta? It is a great small town that was originally settled by German farmers who were attracted to the rich soil and warm climate. While it is probably most well known for its Elberta German Sausage Festivals, the town has recently added a new high school. Now offering both an elementary and high school, Elberta has become even more attractive to home buyers. This small town may be exactly what you want!

The South is known for its flavorful cooking and we have a well deserved reputation for frying any and everything. Thanksgiving turkeys are no exception! A crispy fried turkey will compliment any Thanksgiving meal. To fry a turkey, you need to make sure the turkey has been thawed safely by carefully following the instructions attached to the bird. You will also need a large stockpot to heat your peanut oil to 350 degrees. After reaching the correct temperature, carefully lower your turkey into the hot oil and cook for approximately 3 ½ minutes per pound. After the appropriate cook time, simply pull that bird out of the cooker, let it cool on some paper towels, and then gobble it up!!!

While the Northern states are seeing their neighborhoods blanketed in white from the first snow, in South Alabama we are blessed with the beauty of snow-white cotton bolls covering acres of land. It is not uncommon to see tourists pull over, jump out of their cars, and begin feverishly taking pictures of the beautiful white fields.

Most people are aware that cotton is used in fabrics but are not aware that it is also used in film, writing paper, and U.S. currency. The oil from cotton seed is used in cosmetics, cooking, and soap. Cotton in Alabama is planted in the spring with the cotton bolls opening during the fall, and then it is harvested before Christmas.

When was the last time you shopped at a locally owned grocery store? Well, move over Publix and Walmart because locals love the Elberta Grocery located in the German settled town of Elberta. It's a small store that offers all the necessities and much more. It has gas, a lunch counter, groceries, and best of all a full-service butcher shop. People drive from all over the county to purchase their ten different types of sausage and steaks freshly cut by a third generation father and son butcher team. Elberta Grocery's reputation for some of the best meats on the Gulf Coast is well deserved. Be sure to stop by the next time you're traveling the coast!

If you're heading down the back road of Hwy 98 in Elberta, there's a good chance you'll run into the Roadkill Cafe. Yes, you heard me say it correctly. But before you think your worst dining nightmare has come true, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. First, let's dispel the rumor. No, their first catch of the day has not been scraped off the road with a spatula. And, yes, their food is fresh, and USDA approved.

What you will find is hole-in-the-wall dining at its finest along with exemplary Southern hospitality from down-home country cookin' people. Daily specials include fried chicken, pork chops, and fried catfish. You better get there early, however, because they only serve lunch and once the food is gone, it's gone! Mike, the owner, gives away one free meal a day to a lucky patron that pulls a red poker chip out of a bag filled with white poker chips. Roadkill Cafe is more than just a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. It is the epitome of comfort food.

Für Das Gute Leben! These words welcome visitors to the small town of Elberta, and they describe it perfectly. Für das gute leben means "for the good life", and this weekend over 30,000 people are expected to be in town to enjoy some of the good life for themselves.

The Sausage Festival is a bi-annual event sponsored by the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department. It began in 1978, and has grown steadily over the years. Over 7,000 pounds of German Sausage will be grilled to perfection, along with other favorites like German stuffed cabbage, goulash, and German potato salad. Live music goes on all day, but the hit of the festival is always the Polka band that takes center stage in the afternoon.

As if the great food and music weren't enough, over 200 arts and crafts booths will be open, with something for everyone. And for the kids, there's a children's area, complete with carnival rides and face painting.

So come on down, enjoy a German sausage and remember, you can live here too!
  • Elberta attracted a number of German settlers who continued their love of sausages. You won't hear many German accents anymore but you can still enjoy their tradition and visit the annual Sausage Festival in April/May. Whilst in the area visit the local farmers market for an excellent choice of fresh local produce.
