Part of that project included an old slag furnace, in operation until about 1919, producing some of Alabama's most valued products, such as pig iron. Later this site became the home of Hewitt-Trussville School, located off Parkway Drive.

Paine Intermediate and Primary School was built in 2003. The Trussville City School System was established in the spring of 2005, becoming independent of the Jefferson County School System at that time. The new Hewitt-Trussville High School was built in 2008 off of Deerfoot Parkway in Trussville. The school was named after Robert Hewitt, who was school superintendent in 1869.
