To say that Mountain Brook is upscale is an understatement. It is one of the most affluent cities in Alabama if not America! The way of life is definitely Southern and genteel. Gorgeous tree-lined neighborhoods boast what many would consider mansions. In 1929, area businessman Robert Jemison, Jr. developed the area along Red Mountain and Shades Mountain. There are three distinct "villages" comprising Mountain Brook: English Village, Mountain Brook Village and Crestline Village. Over twenty thousand people call Mountain Brook home.

Whole Foods Market is opening a second Birmingham area location in the winter of 2016. Eat something healthy, delicious, and "made from scratch" before you get your shopping done. The pizza is delicious!

  • Recently Business Insider examined 2,754 municipalities across the country to determine the top 50 suburbs and Mountain Brook, Alabama was ranked second! To qualify, the area had to be within 25 miles of the nearest metro area and have a population of 5,000 and 100,000. The rankings factored in median household income, average commuting times, public school ratings, poverty and crime rates and housing affordability. The community has residential areas designed by Warren Manning, the landscape planner behind New York City’s Central Park, its own school system, a median household income of $131,281 and five distinct shopping villages. The only other Alabama community to make this list was a Birmingham suburb as well, Vestavia Hills!

For as long I as can remember, Smith's Variety has been in the same location in the Mountain Brook Shopping Center in Mountain Brook Village. As a child it was my favorite store and it has only gotten bigger and better over the years. Although the old shopping center is being torn down (the new Lane Parke Development is well underway), Smith's Variety will stay in the community, moving just minutes away to Crestline Village, tentatively scheduled for January 2016.

As a child growing up in Mountain Brook, I was always fascinated by the wooden waterwheel on the 1926 Mill House on Shades Creek on Mountain Brook Parkway! I didn't know the history, which at that time was not so many years in the past. A replica built on the very foundations of an earlier grist mill, the Old Mill House first served as a tea room and was built by the Jemison Companies to promote the newly developed suburb of Mountain Brook. It even had hitching posts for horses! Surrounded by the grand old homes that were part of the original development of this lovely suburb south of Downtown Birmingham, the 1920's charm remains and yet is only minutes away from what many of us believe is the best dining, shopping and amenities around.

When I'm in the mood for noodles, I mean ANY kind of noodles, Nothing But Noodles is the place to go! My favorite is the Southwest Chipotle with chicken. The fettuccini with red bell peppers, onions, chipotle and roasted pepper cream sauce is to die for! Spicy with a kick!

One of the more famous landmarks in the city, if not the State of Alabama. Built in 1926, it is a replica of a mill built by the Jemison Company. It was built to promote the new Mountain Brook suburb in Birmingham and it is a great entry point to the community. Located at 2780 Mountain Brook Parkway, it is actually on the site of the earlier grist mill on the bank of Shades Creek.

Designed by landscape architect William H. Kessler and is was a tea room at one time with hitching posts for horses. Suffering a closure during the Great Depression, it was sold and converted to a residence. It has oak clapboarding and hand-split wood roof shakes on the exterior; pegged floors and a stone fireplace. A wooden bridge connects it to Mountain Brook Parkway. The wooden waterwheel actually turns when the creek is high enough to fill the sluice. Go by and give it a look after a really hard rain!!

    Mountain Brook, AL
Incorporated in 1942, Mountain Brook was the first city in Alabama to operate under the Council-Manager form of government. The City Council meets the second and fourth Mondays of each month and all citizens are encouraged to attend. According to the 2010 census, the population is 20,413 and is considered one of America's wealthiest communities, but often overlooked is the fact it is ranked as one of the most charitable per capita as well. Originally developed in 1929 by Robert Jemison, it is centered around three "villages": English Village, Crestline Village and Mountain Brook Village. Most of the development preserved existing trees; 92.03% under tree cover making it one of the highest ratios in the country. Featuring an award winning public school system consisting of six locations: four elementary schools, one junior high school and one high school. There are two private elementary schools in Mountain Brook as well.
  • Recently completed in 2013, the 53,000 square foot facility features underground employee parking, city offices, a fire station, police station and meeting rooms. The two story building houses the mayor's office and boasts a 9/11 memorial flown in from the site of the World Trade Center in New York that will sit outside the fire department headquarters. It will help promote a sense of unity. The police station will have high-tech interview rooms, a fully-secured evidence chamber and maximum security jail cells and holding areas. City Manager Sam Gaston explains "This was built to serve our residents" referring to the building as a whole. There are 61 underground parking spaces that are barely noticeable provide three separate entrances. State of the art security procedures have been integrated in the building.

Jemison Park is located on Mountain Brook Parkway and features walking trails and a great place for kids to ride their bikes while Mom and Dad walk or stroll the younger members of the family. A great place to walk the dogs, too. There is a nature trail and Shades Creek is deep enough to float a small boat. Friends of Jemison Park have printed bird lists for the bird watchers located at both ends of the Park near Overbrook Road and Cahaba Road. Signs identify various plants and area wildlife and one details the activity of beaver that live in the area. Benches for resting or just people watching are available throughout.
