Alabama Symphony OrchestraThough not formally established until 1933, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra began dazzling audiences in 1921. While their name has changed several times over the years, the ASO has always provided outstanding performances of varying musical styles. The ASO also consistently welcomes some of the finest guest performers in the world to Alabama. Alabama Jazz Hall of FameLocated in the historic Carver Theater, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame was established in 1978 to commemorate the role that jazz has played in our state's culture. Exhibits detail the musical accomplishments of jazz legends like Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Ersine Hawkins. Visitors can take a journey through the history of jazz, from early boogie-woogie to the most outrageous offerings of modern experimental jazz. The Hall of Fame sponsors a number of concerts and jazz events throughout the year. Montgomery Symphony OrchestraThe Montgomery Symphony Orchestra produces a wide range of orchestral pieces that range from 16th century European compositions to contemporary American works. The Montgomery Symphony Orchestra began in 1976 as a community orchestra with 30 musicians and a part time director, and has since grown to a 75-member ensemble with professional direction and management. Tuskegee ChoirThe Tuskegee Choir is one of the most famous examples of a classic American gospel choir. First organized by school president Booker T. Washington in 1884 as a singing quartet, the choir grew in number and in reputation over the next century. Today the choir continues to be a shining example of Spiritual vocal music in the revival style. The Mobile PopsThe Mobile Pops formed in 1977, spun from the Spirit of Mobile Marching 200 band which was formed to help celebrate the Bicentennial of 1976. Thus the bright marching uniforms were exchanged for black tie attire, and the Mobile Pops have been performing free community concerts ever since. The Pops pride themselves on performing exciting, educational concerts that bring music to the public. Huntsville Chamber Music GuildThe Huntsville Chamber Music Guild has been presenting enchanting performances of small-ensemble classical music since 1953. The Guild is happy to attract highly skilled musicians from around the world. All performances are held at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville. |
