As active as the people of the Gulf Shores region are, sometimes it's nice to just sit back, relax and take in a great sporting event. Here are some of the sports venues in the greater Gulf Shores area. Mobile Greyhound ParkJust southwest of Mobile lies one of the area's most popular attractions, the Mobile Greyhound Park. The park runs evening races Monday through Saturday, with matinees on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. No races are run on Sundays, although the clubhouse is still open for those who'd like to watch simulcasts of races at venues around the country. Admission is always free as long as you're age 18 or older. Mobile Greyhound Park also offers visitor packages that include transportation to the game, accommodations and breakfast in the morning. Mobile BayBearsThe BayBears arrived in Mobile in 1997, following the construction of Hank Aaron Stadium (named after the Mobile native and baseball's all time home-run leader). A Double A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, the Bay Bears won the Southern League Championship in 1998. The stadium provides up close views all the baseball action, and the grassy hill over the left field wall (known as BayBear Mountain) allows families to enjoy a great picnic baseball style. Two group areas, Gaslight Park and BayBear Beach & Boardwalk, are available outside of the park gates for rental as well. Five Flags SpeedwayAuto racing fans in the eastern half of the Gulf Shores region head to Pensacola, Florida to catch high-speed stock car action at its best. One of the biggest events at the speedway is the Snowball Derby held each winter. Five Flags has been a bright spot on the regional sports scene for over 35 years. |
