Life in the Gulf Coast is full of surprises, and discovering the region can be something of an adventure. Here are a few of the interesting attractions and things to see around the area. Alabama Gulf Coast ZooNothing quite parallels the experience of seeing animals interact in their natural habitat. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has over 250 exotic species of animals spread over 16 acres of coastal woodland. Among the animals represented are lions, tigers, pythons, iguanas and a number of tropical birds. There are paved paths for easy access throughout the park, and elevated observation decks ensure that visitors will glimpse the animals they came to see. Alligator AlleyThere are over 150 alligators here, many rescued from dangerous situations. Alligator Alley provides a safe haven for large gators caught in unnatural environments that would otherwise be killed. Visitors have the chance to feed gators themselves, some of which are over 13 feet long. The star of Alligator Alley is lovable Captain Crunch, a 13-foot 2-inch long alligator that weighs in at over 800lbs. You can even help save endangered alligators by donating to the Adopt-A-Gator program. Bellingrath Gardens and HomeThe Bellingrath Gardens is one of the top public gardens in the region, with over 65 acres or roses, marigolds, camellias and countless other species of plants and flowers blooming throughout the year. The grounds contain a 15-room museum housed in the former Bellingrath home, a small chapel and bridal garden. A river pavilion on the Fowl River is also the docking place of river cruises by the M/V Southern Belle, a 150-passenger vessel that offers sightseeing tours, dinner cruises and charters. The Bellingrath Gardens and Home are located in Theodore, AL. Adventure IslandSite of Alabama's only active volcano, Adventure Island comes alive with an amazing display of steam, vibration and musical eruptions designed to delight and entertain the entire family. There are also two 18-hole mini-golf courses, a go-kart track, laser tag, an arcade, paddleboats, bumper boats and virtual rides. Adventure Island can be found in between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Daphne Civic CenterThe city of Daphne's Civic Center features 3 meeting rooms, two galleries, and an 11,800 square foot exhibit hall with stage. The Civic Center is one of the most popular community centers in the region, hosting weddings, special galas, home & garden shows, community dances and workshops. The Civic Center also features state-of-the-art facilities and a dedicated support staff. |
