In recent years, the music scene in the Gulf Coast region has seen an incredible amount of growth. The community's acceptance of a wide range of performances and ensembles is a sign that our performing groups will remain successful for years to come. A sample of the ensembles in the region: Mobile SymphonyWhat began in the 70's as a program welcoming touring symphonies each concert season finally evolved into a local symphony orchestra. The symphony presents a full season of concerts, switching between classic concerts and pops concerts. The Mobile Symphony also welcomes frequent guest artists and soloists each season. Performances are held in the Saenger Theatre and the Laidlaw PAC Recital Hall at the university of South Alabama. The mobile Symphony also runs the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra, which gives the top young musicians in the area the opportunity to hone their talents. Mobile OperaMobile Opera has been enriching the lives of audiences along the Gulf Coast since its inception in 1946. The company continues to produce innovative operas that showcase both the dramatic aspects of the form as well as the sheer beauty and power of the human voice. One of Mobile Opera's primary goals is to encourage young Americans to understand the importance of opera as an art form. By making opera accessible to audiences of all ages, Mobile Opera hopes to generate future generations of opera fans and performers. Mobile Chamber Music SocietyWhen people think of classical music, they typically envision symphonies with hundreds of musicians. In chamber music, small ensembles perform complex and emotive musical pieces in smaller acoustic spaces. The Mobile Chamber Music Society brings some of the world's most acclaimed Chamber Music groups to audiences in the Gulf Coast region. The Mobile PopsThe Mobile Pops formed in 1977, spun from the Spirit of Mobile Marching 200 band which was formed to help celebrate the Bicentennial of 1976. Thus the bright marching uniforms were exchanged for black tie attire, and the Mobile Pops have been performing free community concerts ever since. The Pops pride themselves on performing exciting, educational concerts that bring music to the public. WHIL - FMWHIL has been the home of Classical music in the gulf coast for more than 25 years. The station helps to foster interest in the local classical music scene by broadcasting concerts of a number by regional groups. WHIL's studio and offices are located inside of Murray Hall on the campus of Spring Hill College. |
