Museums
In the communities around Mobile Bay you 'll find a number of excellent museums that bring out the rich culture and history of the Gulf Shore region. Here are some of the more notable museums in and around Mobile. Mobile Museum of ArtFounded in 1963 by the Mobile Art Association, the Mobile Art Museum features a breathtaking architectural space and houses works of arts in a wide variety of mediums, styles and periods. The permanent collection features fine art from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe. There are also special galleries that showcase contemporary glass works and craft works of the 19th and 20th centuries. Gulf Coast Exploreum Science CenterLocated in downtown Mobile, the Gulf Cost Exploreum is a regional science center designed to educate and entertain children and adults alike. Interactive exhibits teach children many about many core scientific areas such as chemistry, simple mechanics and biology. In addition to the exhibits, the Exploreum also features an amazing IMAX theatre. The Old Courthouse MuseumSet in the historic downtown square of Monroeville, the Old Courthouse and the surrounding neighborhoods helped inspire Harper Lee's Pulitzer-Prize winning novel To Kill A Mockingbird. The film adaptation of this classic story carefully re-created the old Courthouse for the famous courtroom scene, one of the most memorable moments in the history of American cinema. The museum hosts rotating collections of artifacts from Alabama history and presents a production of To Kill A Mockingbird each year. Conde-Charlotte Museum HouseThe Conde-Charlotte Museum House is an important piece of Mobile's history. It was built in 1822 as the city's first official jail. The building was later used as a residence, and in 1940 was restored to reflect the history of the city. Each of the museum's rooms reflects a period in Mobile's history, from early French colonization through the Civil War. |
