Museums

The museums throughout the area help foster educational growth and understanding in a variety of core fields. Many of these institutions are dedicated to the figures and ideals of the Civil Rights Movement, one of the most pivotal changes in the history of American society.

Rosa Parks Museum

By all standards just an ordinary woman before the morning of December 1st, 1955, Rosa Parks's refusal to give her bus seat to a white man became one of the most recognizable and unifying images of the Civil Rights Movement. The Rosa Parks Library and Museum on Troy University's Montgomery campus details the history of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement as a whole. The museum also honors the courage of the stand that Rosa Parks took against inequality.

Civil Rights Memorial Center

Located in Montgomery near some of the most important landmarks of the Civil Rights Movement, this Memorial Center houses in-depth exhibits on those that struggled for equality. The Civil Rights Memorial Center also includes a 69-seat theater, a classroom for educational activities, and displays of contemporary social justice issues. The Wall of Tolerance records the names of those who have pledged to stand against intolerance and hate. The Center honors the memory and achievements of the individuals who lost their lives during the Civil Rights Movement.

National Voting Rights Museum and Institute (Selma)

A grassroots museum located at the foot of the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, the institute details the crucial events that lead to the signing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Founded by former civil rights leaders and survivors of the "Bloody Sunday" attack, this museum serves to educate visitors on important events and leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. The institute records the struggle that many Americans have faced to earn the right to vote.

Mann Wildlife Learning Museum

A great educational resource for children, the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum gives visitors a unique chance to get up close to a wide variety of preserved North American wildlife. Feel the soft fur of a massive grizzly bear, the soft belt of a fox's back or the rigid antlers of the mighty moose. Each of the animals is shown in recreations of their natural habitat to enhance the experience.
